He’s only 21 years old and Spurs guard Dejounte Murray has been appointed starter over Spurs vet and four-time champion, Tony Parker. The Spurs have been plagued by injuries this season and have used several rotations throughout the year at the guard positions. The recent change occurred before the Spurs took on the Indiana Pacers on Sunday. Spurs head coach, Gregg Popovich reportedly pulled Parker aside to tell him, “he thought it was time.”

“I was just like, ‘Oh, no problem,’” Parker told ESPN. “Just like Manu, just like Pau, that day’s going to come. And if Pop sees something that is good for the team, I’ll try to do my best.”

To his credit, Murray has shown flashes of the versatile player the Spurs saw when they drafted the 6’5 Washington guard. He’s even put up double digits in rebounds in multiple games, something no Spurs point guard pulled off with ease since Rod Strickland achieved the feat during the 1989-90 season.

Spurs fans shouldn’t be surprised at Parker’s “team-first” attitude. That mentality has been behind the Spurs longevity of success. Even with injuries looming over the team all year, the Spurs are still sitting at fourth place in the Western Conference behind only the Houston Rockets, Minnesota Timberwolves and the Golden State Warriors.

The Spurs will put their new starting point guard to the test when they host LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers tomorrow night at 7pm at the AT&T Center.
