North East Independent School District trustees voted 7-0 on Tuesday to change the name of Robert E. Lee High School. The trustees noted that the change wouldn’t occur until around the start of the 2018-2019 school year.
Back in 2015, trustees voted 5-2 to keep the name after many considered it a link to a racist past. After the recent events in Charlottesville, Robert E. Lee High School again became a subject of debate. Various petitions arose to fight for both sides; one petition for changing the name garnered over 3,500 signatures while another petition against changing the name racked up over 6,000 signatures.
